FRENCH LANGUAGE DVD RESOURCE

MOCTAR: MILITANT DU MALI

Global Citizenship DVD resource - for Modern Languages (French), Modern Studies, Geography, Politics, Music, History.

In 2006 Moctar Coulibaly, from the Republic of Mali, West Africa, visited several schools in Scotland to speak with French students about life and politics in Mali. The sessions went so well that, before Moctar left, Jubilee Scotland decided to make a DVD about the sorts of topics that students raised in class.

"Moctar: Militant Du Mali" is a series of short films in which Moctar answers questions about Mali. The films are listed in rough order of difficulty level, and the DVD has a menu allowing you to jump straight to the clip you want.

There are also subtitles in French and English. Moctar speaks in West African French, which is quite different from metropolitan French; in some ways it is easier, though turns of phrase, and the West African accent, may be unfamiliar to students - and perhaps even to teachers!

At the higher difficulty levels, Moctar also speaks about human rights, freedom of the press, and the recent history of Mali. Moctar also explains the concept of "cousinage" - the teasing relationship which exists between different families, tribes and ethnic groups in Mali - which students may find very surprising and delightful!
Moctar is a development activist; he and his organisation work to ensure that Malians have access to the basic necessities of life, and to change the national and international politics that keep people poor.
