Scotland campaigns for 100% debt cancellation for the world's poorest countries.
We believe:
- Debt relief works
- Debt relief would enable poor countries to achieve the Millennium
Development Goals. To reach these internationally agreed goals,
the poorest countries will require economic justice through 100% debt
cancellation, trade justice and an increase in aid.
- It is a poor country's right to fund basic social needs before
debt repayment.
- International lenders and debtor country governments must work together.
Future financial stability for poor countries can be achieved by ensuring:
- These countries have the capacity to manage their
debt
- Civil society in indebted countries has an increased
role in decision making
- That governments are accountable to their citizens,
and that the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund act
democratically and openly, and are accountable to all citizens
of the world
