But campaigning for Climate Debt Justice does not end because COP26 does, we still need your help!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re asking Jubilee Scotland supporters to write to the Minister for International Development, Jenny Gilruth MSP to call on her to challenge private banks to offer debt relief to countries that need it and to take steps to avoid low income countries becoming further indebted due to climate change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Write to or email the Minister for International Development<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve created this <a href=\"https:\/\/1drv.ms\/w\/s!AhLUeFC3KgH6h-JKwSWcWw2c2SAKjQ?e=qoKChX\"><u>template letter<\/u><\/a> for Jubilee Scotland supporters to send to Jenny Gilruth. Add your own words if you can, as this makes it more powerful. Then simply insert your full address and the date, print your name, then print the letter, sign it and post to the address shown on the top left.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, you can use the text of the letter in an email to Jenny Gilruth. Please include your name and address in the email as well. You can equally click the link below to have it set up for you!<\/p>\n<a class=\"email-template-button\" href=\"mailto:scottish.ministers@gov.scot?bcc=mail@jubileescotland.org.uk&subject=FAO%20Jenny%20Gilruth%20MSP%20%E2%80%93%20debt%20cancellation%20and%20climate%20debt&body=%0ADear%20Ms%20Gilruth%2C%0AAs%20Scotland%20prepares%20to%20host%20the%20crucial%20COP%2026%20summit%20in%20November%2C%20I%20am%20writing%20to%20ask%20that%20the%20Scottish%20Government%20uses%20its%20powers%20and%20influence%20to%20help%20developing%20countries%20recover%20from%20the%20pandemic%20and%20tackle%20climate%20change%20by%20freeing%20them%20from%20unsustainable%20debt.%0AThe%20Covid-19%20pandemic%20has%20hit%20the%20world%E2%80%99s%20poorest%20people%20hardest.%20This%20year%20an%20estimated%20110%20to%20150%20million%20people%20have%20fallen%20into%20extreme%20poverty%2C%20living%20on%20less%20than%20%241.90%20per%20day.%20The%20pandemic%20also%20created%20a%20debt%20crisis%20for%20low-income%20countries.%20When%20economies%20shut%20down%2C%20many%20developing%20country%20governments%E2%80%99%20only%20option%20was%20to%20take%20on%20more%20debt.%20Repaying%20this%20debt%20drains%20treasuries%2C%20diverts%20money%20from%20healthcare%2C%20education%20and%20other%20vital%20public%20services%2C%20and%20puts%20a%20brake%20on%20growth%20and%20investment.%0AMuch%20of%20this%20debt%20is%20owed%20to%20private%20creditors%2C%20including%20banks%20with%20a%20significant%20presence%20and%20strong%20roots%20in%20Scotland%3A%20Blackrock%2C%20JP%20Morgan%2C%20HSBC%20and%20Aberdeen%20Standard%20Investments.%20Private%20banks%20have%20so%20far%20refused%20to%20join%20debt%20relief%20initiatives%20established%20by%20the%20World%20Bank%20and%20G20%20governments.%0AZambia%2C%20one%20of%20Scotland%E2%80%99s%20international%20development%20partner%20countries%20is%20particularly%20badly%20affected%20by%20private%20debt.%20%C2%A3756%20million%20of%20its%20%C2%A31.34%20billion%20total%20debt%20repayments%20this%20year%20will%20go%20to%20private%20creditors.%20This%20dwarfs%20the%20%C2%A310%20million%20given%20by%20the%20Scottish%20Government%20to%20Zambia%20between%202017%20and%202021%20for%20healthcare%2C%20education%20and%20small-scale%20farming%20projects.%0ADeveloping%20countries%20are%20also%20facing%20the%20prospect%20of%20further%20indebtedness%20as%20a%20consequence%20of%20climate%20change.%20Of%20%24100%20billion%20climate%20finance%20promised%20annually%20in%202009%20by%20wealthy%20countries%2C%20only%20%2479%20billion%20has%20been%20provided%20and%20three-quarters%20of%20this%20is%20in%20the%20form%20of%20loans.%20Given%20that%20low%20income%20countries%20are%20not%20responsible%20for%20high%20levels%20of%20carbon%20emissions%2C%20this%20is%20a%20deeply%20unjust%20situation.%0AThe%20Scottish%20Government%20can%20take%20the%20following%20steps%20to%20address%20this%20dual%20crisis.%20Firstly%2C%20call%20on%20private%20banks%20to%20offer%20debt%20cancellation%20to%20all%20countries%20that%20need%20it.%20Secondly%2C%20help%20to%20avoid%20a%20future%20climate%20debt%20trap%20by%3A%20further%20increasing%20the%20Climate%20Justice%20Fund%3B%20making%20a%20high-profile%20public%20statement%20ahead%20of%2C%20or%20at%20COP%2026%20calling%20on%20other%20wealthy%20countries%2C%20including%20the%20UK%20to%3A%20increase%20grant-based%20climate%20finance%3B%20suspend%20debt%20repayments%20for%20countries%20affected%20by%20climate-related%20disasters%3B%20and%20compel%20private%20creditors%20to%20to%20participate%20in%20multilateral%20debt%20relief%20initiatives%2C%20using%20legal%20mechanisms%20if%20necessary.%0A\" aria-label=\"Send an email using our pre-prepared email template\"><i class=\"fa fa-envelope-open\"><\/i><span class=\"button-text\"><span class=\"button-text__title\">Send an email<\/span>Send a message using our template email<\/span><\/a>\n<p><strong>Write to your MSP about unjust debt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As well as (or instead of) writing to the Minister, you can contact your MSP\/s via <a href=\"http:\/\/writetothem.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/writetothem.com&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1630509750557000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGQvQZEfcD7yz7lAChTCUB9xouf2g\">writetothem.com<\/a>.
