Dear Hilary Benn, I welcome the debt cancellation agreed by the G8 at the Gleneagles summit and recognise the role played by the UK government in securing this agreement. But I want to express my concern that debt cancellation is made conditional on poor countries implementing specific economic policies. The UK government recently undertook not to attach harmful economic policy conditions to the aid it gives directly to impoverished countries, a step I welcome. But this must also be extended to debt cancellation. I also urge you to use your influence at the World Bank and IMF to stop making debt relief conditional on adopting particular harmful economic policies such as trade liberalisation, privatisation and cuts in public spending. Take the lead by delivering UK debt cancellation without reference to World Bank or IMF conditions. Yours sincerely Debt campaigner Jubilee Scotland
