Dear Gordon Brown, Re: Nigeria's Debt Deal I am writing to urge the UK government to return to Nigeria the £1.7 billion it is paying to the UK as part of its 2005 debt cancellation agreement. During recent years – and particularly over the last twelve months – I have been part of the UK and international campaign calling for debt cancellation, trade justice and more and better aid. Along with hundreds of thousands of others, I have urged the UK government to use its influence to secure further cancellation of unpayable and unjust debt, and have congratulated it when it has responded to this call. In this context, I am horrified by the prospect of the UK and other rich countries taking more from Nigeria in the next six months ($12.4 billion) than the Gleneagles 2005 debt deal – if finally agreed – will deliver in 10 years (around $10 billion). This year, as we called on you to make poverty history, the UK government promised to focus on the needs of Africa. How then, can the UK justify taking more than twice as much from Nigeria in just a few months as it gives to Africa in a whole year? I recognise that the UK government has worked hard this year to ensure that Africa was on the agenda for the G8 and that substantial debt cancellation was agreed for Nigeria. I would not want to see this effort undermined by a willingness to receive this vast sum from a desperately poor country. I urge you to return the money to Nigeria immediately so that it can be used as it is needed for poverty reduction. Yours sincerely Debt campaigner Jubilee Scotland
