World Bank and IMF Threaten G8 Deal 4.08.05
Leaked documents reveal the threat to the G8 debt deal.
On August 3rd the World Bank called for major changes to the G8 deal. It claimed that the G8's funding for the deal does not match what is needed. It also complained that the proposed debt cancellation would not be tied to economic performance. In other words, the Bank wants to continue to use debt relief to exert mastery over heavily indebted countries. If the Bank's changes are implemented, the G8 debt deal could actually become a step backwards for the world's poor

NEW: Leaks reveal IMF threat to already weak G8 debt deal 15.07.05 Debt campaigners today revealed leaked documents that show European representatives at the IMF are suggesting major modifications to last week's G8 debt deal. These could delay or even halt the debt cancellation promised to 18 countries by the G8 and maintain an IMF stranglehold over developing country economies even after they qualify for debt cancellation. Paris Club Cancels 80% of Iraq's Debt 22nd Nov
Paris Club members met at the end of last week to thrash out a deal that has ended with an agreement to cancel 80% of the debts owed to them by Iraq.The nature of Iraq's debt accumulated under Saddam Hussein is considered to be Odious and this raises serious questions about debt relief for other nations who are burdened with debt accumulated under dictatorships. Madagascar 15th Country to Reach HIPC Completion Point
The World Bank has announced that Madagascar has reached completion point of the Heavily Indebted Poor Country Initiative (HIPC). Madagascar will qualify for $1.9billion US dollars- half of the country's total debt stock.....Read more
Gordon Brown and Hilary Benn Face Debt, Campaigners in Kirkaldy, Fife. October 22nd
The Chancellor and Secretary of State for International Development addressed debt campaigners and local Labour party representatives at a meeting in Kirkcaldy. Campaigners challenged Ministers on the timescale of delivering debt relief, how the UK plans to work towards trade justice and meet a target for reaching 0.7% aid targets....more details.		  

Paris Club Grants debt relief to Ethiopia Oct 15th
Ethiopia have received US$ 758 million of debt relief from the Paris Club under the framework of the Enhanced HIPC initiative. In total, Ethiopia's debt to Paris Club creditors has been reduced from US$1087 million to US$153 million as a result of this agreement. Read More

Washington Autumn Meeting - Disappointment for campaigners Oct 4th
Following last week's exciting announcement that the UK plans to cancel our share of multilateral debt there was disappointment at the IMF/World Bank Autumn meeting in Washington at the weekend. British plans to win international support for writing off the debt of the world's poorest countries came to nothing after the Group of Seven rich nations failed to reach agreement. More

Ghana Qualifies for $3.5 billion in Debt Relief
Ghana has become the 14th country to reach Completion Point (the point at which debt stock is actually written off) under the Heavily Indebted poor Country (HIPC) initiative. Despite some reluctance to join the flawed debt relief scheme Ghana now joins Ethiopia, Niger and Senegal all of whom have qualified this year. More

Hundreds of festival goers at T-in-the-Park call on the UK to cancel our share of multilateral debt. Festival goers signed hundreds of postcards and a copy of a BIG letter to the Chancellor calling for an end to world debt.

Brown urges IMF to revalue gold for debt relief
In a speech at a conference in the Vatican on alleviating world poverty Brown said: "To do more to complete the process of debt relief, we propose to the international community that we consider anew all options to finance further debt relief for the poorest countries, including making better use of IMF gold so that ... we can begin to provide multilateral debt relief up to 100 percent." African countries should refuse to repay their foriegn debts says a special adviser to United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan. Annan's economic adviser Jeffrey Sachs first called on developed countries to cancel Africa's debts. But failing that, he said Africa should ignore its US $201 billion (£109 billion) debt burden. More
G8 Summit to be held at Gleneagles, Perthshire
Next year July 6-8 2005 the UK will host the G8 Summit in Scotland at Gleneagles. 2005 is a rare opportunity for campaigning, the UK holds the G8 presidency and the EU presidency, it is 20 years since Live Aid and the start of the 10 year countdown tothe 2015 Millennium Development Goal target of halving world poverty.
