The Jubilee Cyclists are planning
to cycle to the G8 Summit in Russia this summer. Keep an eye on
this space for coming dates of their trip and updates from along
the route from the UK to St. Petersburg.
The Jubilee Cyclists are a group of
dedicated campainers who every year combine their passion for cycling
with the goal of highlighting the issue of debt justice. A group
consisting of over 20 cyclists travel to wherever the G8 summit
is being held. Last year in 2005, to mark the G8 Summit being held
in Scotland they traveled to Africa visting Tanzania and Kenya and
then cycled the length of Brtain up to Edinburgh for the Make Poverty
History march on July 2nd.

Cyclists Denied Visas for Russian G8 -28.06.06
The Jubilee cyclists have been denied entry into Russia for
this year’s G8 Summit in St. Petersburg. After meeting
the Russian consulate in Edinburgh as well as providing reference
letters from the Jubilee Scotland office, the 11 cyclists
from Scotland have been notified that the Russian authorities
will not be granting them visa’s. No explanation has
been given for the refusal but it has not come as a complete
surprise due to Russia’s suspicious attitude towards
NGOs.
Disappointing
as this is for the cyclists, they intend to press on and plan
to travel through Estonia and Latvia in a bid to highlight
the continuing disaster of debt and the need for the G8 to
continue to take action. More information on the details of
the trip will follow shortly... |
Each G8 cycle proves an amazing
experience meeting campaigners, holding events and talking with
the media about debt (as well as dealing with punctures).
But this year proves to be the
most challenging yet. While the cyclists have been able to get to
all the recent G8 summits except the summit in the U.S in 2004,
getting in to Russia is not guaranteed. We will keep you posted!
Added to the problem is the fact
that this years G8 summit is noticealby lacking in an anti-poverty
agenda. Russia hold the G8 presidency for 2006 and the themes they
are concentrating on are Energy, Security and Education. For more
