Most of the world's poorest countries are in a debt
crisis. They are forced to spend money on debt repayments rather
than on basic health and education for their people. Despite their
promises, the leaders of the world's richest countries have taken
very little action on debt. To date only 20% of the debts of the
42 countries eligable for debt reduction has been cancelled.

What more can the UK do?
The commitment to cancel 100% of the (bilateral) debts owed directly to
the UK is welcome. However, poor countries still owe massive amounts to
the multilateral institutions, primarily the IMF and World Bank. Together
with other rich nations, the UK has an influential role in these institutions
to ensure that they offer deeper and faster debt relief.
The UK can lead by example. It would cost each of us only
£3 per year over the next 10 years to cancel our share of this debt.
Whilst this is small change for the UK it would make a big difference
to the citizens of the world's poorest countries.
